Frequently Asked Questions
What is Somatic Therapy?
Traditional talk therapy focuses heavily on the narrative of what happened. Somatic therapy invites the body into the conversation. “Soma” is the Greek word for living body; this approach recognizes that trauma, stress, and emotional pain are physically stored in our nervous systems. Through somatic therapy, we track bodily sensations, breath, and movement patterns to help release trapped stress, process trauma, and restore a sense of safety and regulation to your day-to-day life.
What is Transpersonal Therapy?
Transpersonal therapy is a holistic approach that bridges modern psychology with spiritual, existential, and human growth dimensions. It views you as more than just your symptoms or diagnosis. In transpersonal work, we explore your deeper sense of meaning, purpose, connection to something greater, and the expansion of human consciousness. It honors your spiritual or spiritual-adjacent experiences as vital components of your psychological healing.
What is Gestalt Therapy?
Gestalt therapy is an experiential, present-moment approach to healing. Instead of just talking about the past, we focus on what is happening right now in the room—your immediate thoughts, feelings, bodily reactions, and relationship with the therapist. Through creative interventions (such as empty-chair work or role-play), Gestalt therapy helps you gain a heightened awareness of unresolved conflicts (“unfinished business”) and integrates disconnected parts of yourself.
How do you approach Trauma Therapy?
We view trauma not as an event itself, but as the overwhelming impact an event has on the nervous system’s ability to cope. Our approach is strictly trauma-informed, meaning we prioritize your safety, pacing, and choice above all else. We do not force you to recount traumatic details; instead, we work gently with your body and mind to unburden the nervous system, change stuck relational patterns, and build long-term resilience.
What does it mean to work with a Clinical Intern?
Our clinical interns are advanced Master’s-level students completing the final, intensive clinical phase of their graduate counseling degrees. Working with an intern offers unique benefits:
-
Affordability: Interns allow us to offer high-quality therapy at significantly reduced rates, making holistic care accessible to more of our community.
-
Rigorous Support: Every intern is closely supervised by a licensed, seasoned clinician on our senior staff. This means you essentially get the benefit of two minds collaborating on your care.
-
Up-to-Date Training: Interns bring the latest, cutting-edge psychological research and passionate, dedicated energy to their sessions.
Do you bill insurance?
No, Awakened Therapy Center does not bill health insurance providers directly. We operate as an Out-of-Network (OON) practice. This model allows our clinicians to provide highly individualized care based purely on your therapeutic needs, rather than having your treatment length, frequency, or modality dictated by an insurance company’s rigid constraints.sessions.
Can I get a Superbill for Out-of-Network (OON) reimbursement?
Yes, absolutely. Upon request, we can provide you with a monthly document called a Superbill. This is a detailed invoice containing the specific clinical codes required by insurance providers. You can submit this Superbill directly to your insurance company, and depending on your specific plan’s out-of-network behavioral health benefits, they may reimburse you for a portion of your session fees.
Tip: We highly recommend calling your insurance provider before your first session and asking: “What are my out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits?”
What are the benefits of paying Out-of-Network / Private Pay?
When you pay out-of-pocket, your private medical information stays private. To utilize insurance, a therapist is legally required to give you a formal mental health diagnosis, which becomes a permanent part of your medical record. Private pay protects your strict confidentiality and gives you and your therapist total autonomy over the direction, pace, and frequency of your healing journey.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
Yes, we strongly believe that financial constraints shouldn’t prevent you from accessing deep, holistic healing. We offer sliding scale spots specifically through our Clinical Intern Program.
Because our interns are in the final stages of their advanced Master’s degrees, they are able to offer high-quality, fully supervised care at significantly reduced, flexible rates.
If you need financial accommodation, please indicate this on our contact form or let our intake coordinator know during your initial call so we can discuss our current slot availability and find a rate that works sustainably for you.
How long is a therapy session?
A standard individual therapy session lasts exactly 45 to 50 minutes, which allows time for documentation and preparation between clients. However, specialized formats like couples counseling or intensive trauma processing often require extended sessions lasting 80 to 90 minutes to properly navigate complex dynamics.
How long does therapy take?
Short-term therapy for targeted symptom management typically takes 3 to 4 months (8 to 16 sessions). For deeper emotional processing, resolving trauma, or changing long-standing behavioral patterns, the timeline extends to 6 months to 2+ years of consistent work.
Are you ready to find a new way forward?
Healing is not about fixing what is broken; it is about awakening to who you already are. No matter how stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected you might feel right now, your body and mind inherently know how to move toward wholeness. You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Whether you are drawn to somatic somatic experiencing, transpersonal exploration, or are simply looking for a safe space to land, we are here to walk alongside you.
